From Passion to Purpose: The Journey Behind Our Brand
Everyone has a story to tell, what's yours? Is your story part of your strategy? Stories are important for many reasons. It connects you to your audience, your audience learns about you, and it also sets you apart from others. Your story explains why you started your business, who you are, why you do what you do and the list goes on and on.
If you own a business, are starting a business or have a side business, your story should be incorporated into your marketing strategy. People want to know who they are working with and how they can connect to you. It's not just more content to add to a blog or your website, it actually humanizes you and adds a side that your audience should see.
For me, my story is this…I studied marketing in college, because I loved the creative side to it. I loved that I could create advertisements for customers and they would buy products because of those. However, I didn't do an internship which I should have, I was young and didn't know any different, and graduated with a BS in Marketing. Then it came time to apply for jobs. Well it's 2004 and marketing jobs were not panning out to be what I wanted. I was getting all of the door to door or telemarketing jobs. If you know me then you know those jobs are not for me. During college I worked in retail and since marketing wasn't panning out, I went to my boss about a full-time job and the next thing I know I am now a manager in training at a department store. It wasn't what I originally wanted to do, but I needed a job.
I still wanted to pursue a marketing career, but it was getting harder and harder to get out of retail and into a new industry. I loved the people I worked with and loved the creative side I had in my job. Eventually though I did leave retail to pursue my other dream of becoming a paralegal. I was able to go to school part-time and work part-time jobs. I graduated with my paralegal degree only to find that I couldn't get a job because I didn't have the experience. However, while searching for paralegal jobs, I was offered a job as a marketing assistant. I couldn't believe it, I got a marketing job. It's now 2014 and its been 10 years since I graduated with my degree and social media is taking off. I was having to teach myself a lot about the digital world.
I left that job to work at an advertising agency and learned so much more than I could imagine. With the help of my mom who was a big advocate of mine, I started my own marketing firm. I was ready to face the world and see where it would lead. However, in 2017, social media for businesses still wasn't taking off like I thought. Businesses needed the advertising and they knew social media would help, but they weren't quite there yet. So I was back to needing a full-time job, and yes I landed back in retail. Only this time, I knew it wasn't going to be a decade long decision like it was the last time. I didn't want to miss out on time with friends and family and I was going to start a career as a paralegal or in marketing, I just didn't know which one.
At the beginning of 2020 right before Covid hit, I landed a job as a paralegal. Thank goodness, because I wasn't looking forward to working in retail at the time of covid. I loved working as a paralegal, because I love the law. I love reading legal fiction, listening to true crime podcasts, following interesting trials, and watching true crime documentaries.
However, while working as a paralegal, my mom's health started failing and I wanted to have more time to be with her and help take care of her.
So when I least expected the right job fell into my lap. I was able to work as a social media marketing assistant, creating social media campaigns and driving clients to our business. I had dreamed of doing this so long ago and was excited for the opportunity. Meanwhile, I am dealing with my mom declining in health and falling apart on the inside while working a 40 hour week. I did have the ability to spend time with her while working, but it was hard to see her decline. July 2023 was a big month for the company and we were in the middle of a huge project which I was excited about being a part of. I had no idea what was around the corner.
Mama passed away July 2023 and I struggled to keep everything together. I knew I had to keep moving forward and working because I had a career. Then comes 2024 and I get laid off and have to figure out what's next. I kept going back to mom wanted me to start my own company again. Every time I worked on it, thought about the next steps, I'd see a cardinal and think that mama was telling me I was on the right path. So fast forward to now and the doors that I thought were opportunities were being closed so I could revamp my company and help others. With a guardian angel looking out for me, I have had the courage to step out and revamp my business!
